“Design is the method of putting form and content together. Design, just as art, has multiple definitions; there is no single definition. Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated.” – Paul Rand

Marmalade Bleue, or her real name Danielle Evans, is an incredible food typographer located in Columbus, Ohio in the United States of America. She likes to enchant us with beautiful, stunning lettering and typography. She likes to art direct, style food, and collaborate with creative professionals all around the globe.

We are here to take you on a journey with Danielle, a journey filled with food and typography, blended into art of course. If you want to follow her, you can do it by going onto her website, or onto her Twitter feed. Her website is a portfolio site, so if you want more of the same thing, you can also check her behance page. Enough with the talking. Lets dig ourselves into art.

1. Hungry for Adventure

This beautiful bit is a project made for “ The Guardian”. They wanted to do something for their Saturday lifestyle insert, called “ Do Something”, where one can learn how to improve its non-digital self. It was all about focusing on a local food fare, where you were required to bake Welsh Cakes.

Its primary focus was engaging Londonites, making them eat more diverse foods. Chris Clarke was in charge of art direction, and The Wonder Jam were called in for the photography and videography.

2. Crafted 2014

For the 2014 Cincinnati Addy Awards, Danielle was issued to create a rustic, elegant yet fresh piece of art work. Landor wanted to tell people to get more in touch with their creative sides, hence the usage of malt, barley, and hops, for the handmade typography.

Dale Doyle was in charge as creative director, Grant Collinsworth was responsible as a design director, and video and photography were made by Eric Hintz and Chris Vogel.

3. Juicy Type

What can you do with twenty-six lemons? You could be saying to yourself. Well this, exactly this. While working for a project for a client, Marmalade Bleue took the opportunity to create this beautiful type, of course, after finishing said project.

Innovative and breath taking. Slicing them nicely, in different shapes and sizes, placing them accordingly, creating variance in contrast, and voila.

4. The Best Meat Naturally

My mouth is already watering. Hey Danielle, you are the guest of honor at the next barbecue I will throw. Wait, not the next. Any barbecue I will ever throw. Marmalade Bleue was approached by Belcampo Meat Co, for this unconventional way of making themselves settled into your house. And she did a terrific job.

Those little touches though, pepper, oregano, salt laying on the table, makes you crave for a delicious meal. We can only wonder how the burgers tasted. In charge of photography were the guys and girls from The Wonder Jam.

5. Typeaholic

Mhmmm dark chocolate is always welcome in my house. Always! This beautiful piece of deliciousness was shot on butcher paper with 66% cacao chocolate. It was issued by Fox Cleveland, as part of a news segment they were doing.

In charge of videography and editing was David Bradford, and the video soundtrack was offered by Freelance Whales “Aeolus”. You can also watch the video here.

6. A Close Shave Type

Nothing beats a good close shave, every man knows this. The people from Old Familiar Barbershop provided the props, and Danielle got her hands dirty. She likes to put it this way “ Each stroke embraces the imperfection and sporadic nature of the medium.” and I fully agree.

7. The Wonder Jam

Using only the stickiest and sweetest raspberry jam there is, Marmalade Bleue, asked by Adam and Allie of The Wonder Jam, created this sweet little thing, as a promo for their marketing and design adventures. I think she did an incredible job, and can’t wait for another project like this one. I had to take a pause from writing, and make myself some peanut-butter and jam sandwiches.

The awesome photos were provided by Allison Lehman, and the “ Mammer Jammer” was Adam Lehman. Kudos to you guys and girls.

8. Peppery Curry

Danielle’s inspiration, for this piece, was the Arabic Dwani Calligraphy, which she used to give her art work a drop of believability, and to better express the proper proportions. Great ad campaign for Imported Peppery.

9. Spicy Chili Type

This surely expresses the spiciness of it all. Just look at those sharp edges, and that lean typography. Chili powder does wonders for Danielle, great choice to convey energetic food. It truly is a “ Savory punch in the face.”

10. Unbleached Flour Type

It makes me think of how I baked doughnuts and pâtés with my grandma, when I was just a young child. She always used the best kind of flour, and it was home made also. Unbleached Quality deserves its name. It is stunning and makes me want to start baking again.

11. Green Tea Type

Don’t let the title fool you, that is Darjeeling, a black tea. In the name of tea, Marmalade Blue brought us this type. You can just feel how light and fluffy the leaves are.

12. French Press Type

This is just to show us how impulsive and creative Danielle can be. It is not for an ad campaign, it was made just for the fun of it. Using Starbucks Komodo Blend this type was arranged perfectly, creating coarseness from the ground to French press, and perfection, from the coffee used. I would really like to see this framed and put in my kitchen, near my coffee machine. Wouldn’t you?
